On March 5th Level 1 Spots in Edmonton, Alberta came alive with the sights and sounds of Team Handball as the venue played host to the 2023 Alberta Team Handball Federation Open Men’s League Championship Playoffs.
On the Men's side, the day started off with two semi finals, the first beginning at 10am. The first semi final match was between between the 1st place North Star Avengers HC and 4th place Sherwood Park HC. The second semi final match featured the 3rd ranked Edmonton HC and the 2nd ranked Calgary HC.
North Star Avengers HC finished 1st in the regular season with a record of 10-2-0.
Calgary HC (8-4-0) defeated Edmonton HC (4-8-0) in the first semi final by a score of 34-27. Going 3 for 4 from the 7m line; Calgary spread around it's scoring with 6 players scoring 3 or more goals. Mihah Cuez led the way with 7 goals, Malek Chaabane netted 6 points, Gerand Christiansen and Mitch Fodor each had 5 goals, Welch Baluya sniped 4 and Kinnkade Streit added 3. Hicham Chaduch notched 2, while William Class and David Frey each added one tot he scoresheet. David Frey was also handed a Red Card and ejected from the game.
Edmonton's scoring was a little more concentrated with 3 players contributing to a majority of the offense and went 2 for 2 from the 7m line. Wilson Sterling was the most productive with 8 goals. Alex Groenen snuck 7 past the goaltender and JW Kim scored 6. Norton, Jimenez and Marin each tallied a single goal in the loss to Calgary HC.
Calgary advances to the ATHF Senior Men's Finals vs North Star Avengers HC
Next up for Calgary HC was the league's top dogs the North Star Avengers (10-2-0) who defeated Sherwood Park HC (2-10-0) in the other semi final match.
The North Star Avengers would uphold their reputation by leading 15-14 at the halftime break. After that however it was all Calgary HC.
Nine players lit the lamp for the North Star Avengers. Tyrel Johnston had 10 goals. Abouhacheem, Peletiere and Rosewich each had 3 goals. Deguey, Johnsen, Parmiter, Spence and Tenuue each pitched in singles. However it wasn't enough to hold back Calgary HC in the second half.
Eight different players pitched in on offense for Calgary HC in the final game. Mihah Cuez pulled the sled the furthest with 12 goals. Chaabane, Frey and Fodor fired 5 goals a piece. Geran Christiansen had a hat trick. Class and Yataghane scored 1 goal each.
After the final buzzer Calgary HC would comeback to win 35-28 over the North Star Avengers to claim the 2023 Alberta Senior Men's Team Handball Championship trophy.
