SJHL POWER RANKINGS - OCT 10TH

The SJHL Power Rankings are decided each and every week by a group of SJHL broadcasters and will be released each Tuesday.

1. Melfort Mustangs 6-0-0-0 (Last Week 1st): The beat goes on for the Melfort Mustangs. The 1st place Mustangs swept their pair of games at home this weekend against the Weyburn Red Wings, coming back to win Friday 5-4 in a shootout and then hanging on for a 4-3 win Saturday. Now after spending most of the start of the season at home, the Mustangs will hit the road for a pair of games against the Kindersley Klippers this weekend.

2. Flin Flon Bombers 5-0-1-0 (Last Week 2nd): Rink staff at the Whitney Forum have been busy the past two weeks replacing red lights from behind both nets at “The Zoo”. Following a weekend where they scored 18 goals, the Bombers would continue to light the lamp in two games against the Notre Dame Hounds, scoring 8 times in both games. In their last four games, the Bombers have scored 34 goals. This coming week is a busy one for the Bombers as they play four games in five nights in Southern Saskatchewan beginning Tuesday night in Yorkton.

3. Humboldt Broncos 4-0-0-0 (Last Week 4th): The Humboldt Broncos have played the least amount of games in the SJHL among the 12 teams, but when they have taken to the ice, they have looked impressive. This past week the Broncos knocked off the La Ronge Ice Wolves 6-2 and earned a 7-1 victory over Notre Dame. However, this week will be more challenging for the club as they play three games in four nights beginning Wednesday at home against the Weyburn Red Wings. They will also play a home and home with Nipawin this coming weekend.

4. Weyburn Red Wings 4-1-0-2 (Last Week 3rd): Just one of a possible four points this past weekend for the Weyburn Red Wings, but both games against the Melfort Mustangs could have gone in their favour and early on this season the Wings are proving they are going to be a difficult team to play against. This week won’t get any easier for the club though as they play the Broncos in Humboldt on Wednesday and then host Flin Flon Saturday at the CPP.

5. Nipawin Hawks 3-2-0-1 (Last Week 5th): After falling 3-0 at home Friday night to the Battlefords North Stars, the Nipawin Hawks bounced back on the road Saturday night as they earned a 3-1 win in the 2nd half of the home and home. Leading the charge was rookie Defenceman Ronan Buckberger who found the back of the net twice in the victory. Nipawin will play a home and home this weekend against the Humboldt Broncos, the team that eliminated them from the 2023 SJHL Playoffs.

6. Yorkton Terriers 3-2-0-1 (Last Week 6th): Despite splitting their two games against the La Ronge Ice Wolves this week, the Yorkton Terriers played some good games. In their loss Wednesday, they outshot the Ice Wolves 42-15. The Terriers will get to stay in their neck of the woods this week as they host Flin Flon tonight (Tuesday), and then play their Highway 10 rivals the Melville Millionaires in a home and home this weekend.

7. Estevan Bruins 3-3-0-1 (Last Week 9th): If you’re an Estevan Bruins fan there are plenty of positives to take away from this past weekend. The club earned 4 out of a possible 6 points and it appears they may have figured out their power-play. Monday afternoon in the Bruins’ 4-3 win over Melville, Estevan scored three of their four on the man advantage, going 3/7. The lone game this week for the Bruins will be this Friday when they host the Flin Flon Bombers.

8. Melville Millionaires 3-2-0-0 (Last Week 6th): The Millionaires split their pair of games this week, earning an overtime win at home against the La Ronge Ice Wolves Friday night, but then falling a goal short Monday afternoon on the road in Estevan. However, through five games this season the Mills continue to impress. Now this week they will get a chance to impress even more as they battle the Yorkton Terriers in a home and home.

9. Battlefords North Stars 3-4-0-0 (Last Week 8th): Despite splitting their games with the Nipawin Hawks this weekend, the North Stars got a massive boost to their line-up with the return of goaltender Justen Maric. In his first game back with the Stars, he earned a 36 save shutout in a 3-0 win over the Hawks in Nipawin. The home and homes will continue for the Stars this weekend as they battle the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday and Saturday.

10. Kindersley Klippers 2-3-0-1 (Last Week 10th): It was a step in the right direction for the Kindersley Klippers this weekend as they earned three out of a possible four points over the Estevan Bruins on the road. Austin Osiowy was great in both games for the Klippers registering a goal and three assists in the two games, giving him DirectWest Rookie of the Week honours. Kindersley will return to the friendly confines of the West Central Events Centre this weekend for a pair of games against the Melfort Mustangs.

11. La Ronge Ice Wolves 2-5-1-0 (Last Week 11th): Three out of Eight points on a four game road trip isn’t the worst result for the La Ronge Ice Wolves, but the team would have probably liked a bit more. Their lone win came this past Wednesday night in Yorkton and in that game, they were heavily outshot. A much lighter schedule for the Ice Wolves this week as they play a home and home with the defending Canterra Seeds Cup Champion Battlefords North Stars beginning Friday night in North Battleford.

12. Notre Dame Hounds 0-8-0-0 (Last Week 12th): It was a road trip that most teams will dread this season and for the Notre Dame Hounds it is one they will look to forget. Three losses. Outscored a combined 23-4 in two games to Flin Flon and one to Humboldt. An extremely difficult schedule and start to the season has the Hounds behind the eight ball early and it won’t get any easier for them. They host Flin Flon Wednesday night at the Duncan McNeil Arena.
